Major Avinash Singh Bhadauria was born on 14 December 1971 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. From an early age, he was drawn towards a career in the Armed Forces and joined the National Defence Academy at Khadakwasla in 1990. After completing his military training, he was commissioned into the 18th Battalion of the Madras Regiment in June 1994. During his early service, he served in areas including Assam and the Kutch region, gaining experience in challenging operational environments.
Major Bhadauria later volunteered for deputation to 8 Rashtriya Rifles, which was deployed in Jammu and Kashmir for counter-insurgency operations. By 2001, he had already gained considerable field experience and had participated in several operations in the region. His professional record was marked by strong leadership, physical fitness and a willingness to lead from the front.
On 28 September 2001, intelligence was received about the presence of heavily armed terrorists in Doda district. Major Bhadauria was entrusted with leading a search-and-destroy operation against the group. He quickly organised his troops and established a cordon around the suspected hideout. When the terrorists opened fire, a fierce exchange followed. Major Bhadauria personally led the engagement and fought at close quarters, neutralising several terrorists while directing his men during the operation.
During the intense firefight, Major Bhadauria sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite being critically injured, he continued to lead and encourage his troops until he could no longer continue. He eventually succumbed to his injuries on 28 September 2001, making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. His troops continued the operation and successfully neutralised the remaining terrorists. In recognition of his exceptional courage, leadership and devotion to duty, Major Avinash Singh Bhadauria was posthumously awarded the **Kirti Chakra**, one of India's highest peacetime gallantry awards.
