Havildar Bahadur Singh Bohra served in 10 Para (Special Forces), The Parachute Regiment of the Indian Army. He belonged to Rawalkhet village in Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand. He later volunteered for service with the elite Para Special Forces and was deployed in Jammu & Kashmir.
In September 2008, his unit was conducting counter-terrorist operations in the Jammu & Kashmir region. On 25 September 2008, an assault team under his command was tasked with a search operation in the Lawanz area, a difficult mountainous region at approximately 14,000 feet altitude.
At about 1815 hours, Havildar Bohra observed a group of terrorists and moved to intercept them. When the terrorists opened heavy automatic fire, he moved aggressively towards them, drawing fire away from his men. He killed one terrorist during the initial engagement but suffered gunshot wounds to his left shoulder.
Despite his injuries, he refused evacuation and continued directing his comrades. He pressed forward, killed another terrorist at very close range and continued the assault. Seriously wounded, he instructed his men to cover him while he threw a grenade and then charged another terrorist in close combat. He killed the terrorist before succumbing to his injuries.
For his conspicuous bravery, inspiring leadership, selflessness and supreme sacrifice, Havildar Bahadur Singh Bohra was awarded the Ashoka Chakra posthumously in the 2009 Republic Day honours.
