Captain Davinder Singh Jass was born on 29 September 1983 in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. He pursued engineering and later management studies before choosing a career in the Armed Forces. Despite having opportunities in the corporate sector, he remained determined to join the Army and entered the Indian Military Academy. He was commissioned into the Corps of Signals on 10 December 2007.
After commissioning, Jass volunteered for the Special Forces. He successfully completed the demanding selection and probation process and was inducted into 1 Para (Special Forces). His transition from a technical military branch to the Special Forces reflected his willingness to take on a more demanding operational role. He soon became involved in counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
On 23 February 2010, intelligence was received about the presence of terrorists in the Chinkipora area of Sopore. Captain Jass planned and led the operation in the densely populated locality. Once contact was established, the terrorists opened fire and a prolonged encounter followed. Jass remained at the forefront of the operation, directing his men and engaging the hostile positions while the team worked to contain the threat.
Captain Davinder Singh Jass was fatally wounded during the encounter and succumbed on 23 February 2010. Two other members of 1 Para also made the supreme sacrifice during the same operation. His actions during the encounter demonstrated courage, determination and leadership under extreme conditions. In recognition of his conduct and sacrifice, the Government of India awarded him the **Kirti Chakra posthumously**.
