Sepoy Dharajit Singh Chahar was born on 15 September 1965 and hailed from Nagla Hira Singh village in Kiraoli tehsil of Agra district, Uttar Pradesh. He joined the Indian Army on 13 January 1985 and was recruited into 4 Jat of The Jat Regiment.
In 1987, Indian forces were inducted into Sri Lanka as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) following the Indo-Sri Lankan Accord. The LTTE refused to disarm, resulting in combat operations by the IPKF under Operation Pawan.
On 13 January 1989, Sepoy Dharajit Singh Chahar was part of an ambush party deployed at a road crossing on the Vavuniya–Mannar Road in Sri Lanka. At about 0850 hours, he spotted LTTE militants approaching unexpectedly through thick jungle and alerted his comrades before opening fire.
During the ensuing exchange, Sepoy Sree Chand of his group was wounded. When an LTTE militant attempted to seize Sree Chand's rifle, Sepoy Dharajit Singh Chahar, without regard for his own safety, charged the militant, fired at him and engaged him in hand-to-hand combat, killing him. Another militant then fired at Chahar, fatally wounding him.
Sepoy Dharajit Singh Chahar succumbed to his injuries on 13 January 1989. For his exceptional courage and valour in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Vir Chakra posthumously. The award was announced in 1990.
