Naik Kaushal Yadav was born on 04 October 1969 in Bhilai, in present-day Chhattisgarh. He joined the Indian Army in 1989 and was recruited into the Parachute Regiment. He later served with 9 Para (Special Forces), where he became a squad commander. His service number was 13618411.
During the 1999 Kargil War, 9 Para (SF) was tasked with operations in the Drass sector. On 25 July 1999, Naik Yadav’s squad was assigned to capture Zulu Top, a high-altitude objective at approximately 5,100 metres. The approach from the western side involved steep slopes, extreme cold and enemy minefields. Using his mountaineering skills, he led his squad up the difficult route and helped establish a foothold on the objective.
When the squad came under heavy automatic fire, Naik Yadav led the assault against the enemy position. He advanced under fire, used grenades and engaged the enemy at close quarters, personally killing five enemy soldiers. Although grievously wounded, he continued the attack and made the supreme sacrifice. His action ensured the capture of Zulu Top. For his conspicuous gallantry and leadership, he was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra.
