Flying Officer Prem Ramsingh Ramchandani was an officer and fighter pilot of the Indian Air Force who served with No. 3 Squadron during the Indo-Pak War of 1965. His service number was 7442 GD(P).
He was born on 19 October 1941 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He was commissioned into the Indian Air Force on 22 June 1963 as part of the 84th Pilots' Course and subsequently qualified as a fighter pilot. By the time of the 1965 war, he was serving with No. 3 Squadron, one of the Indian Air Force's combat squadrons equipped with Mystère IVa fighter aircraft.
During the Indo-Pak War of 1965, No. 3 Squadron operated from Air Force Station Pathankot and undertook offensive and close-support missions in support of Indian Army operations. The squadron participated in operations in the Chhamb and Chawinda sectors and conducted attacks against Pakistani armoured formations and other battlefield targets.
On 22 September 1965, Flying Officer Ramchandani was detailed for an operational mission with a formation led by Flight Lieutenant Doraiswami. During the rapidly changing battlefield situation, the originally assigned targets had changed hands. The formation attacked positions that were subsequently identified as being held by Indian troops.
Indian anti-aircraft fire was directed against the aircraft. Ramchandani's Mystère IVa was hit and caught fire. He successfully ejected from the burning aircraft, but was injured during his descent by parachute. He was subsequently evacuated to a military hospital.
Despite medical treatment, Flying Officer Prem Ramsingh Ramchandani succumbed to his injuries on 26 September 1965, four days after the aircraft incident and shortly before his twenty-fourth birthday.
His service record records his death in service following the 22 September 1965 aircraft incident. His sacrifice is commemorated as part of the Indian Air Force's losses during the Indo-Pak War of 1965.
