Captain Vikram Batra

CAPTAIN · 13 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles (13 JAK RIF)
Biography
Source verified

Captain Vikram Batra was born on 9 September 1974 in Palampur, Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, to Shri Girdhari Lal Batra and Smt Kamal Kanta Batra. He completed his schooling at D.A.V. Public School and Kendriya Vidyalaya, Palampur, before pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree at D.A.V. College, Chandigarh. During his college years, he excelled in the National Cadet Corps (NCC), where he was recognized as the Best NCC Air Wing Cadet of North Zone. Although selected for a lucrative Merchant Navy career, he chose instead to serve the nation by joining the Indian Army.

After successfully clearing the Combined Defence Services Examination, he entered the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, and was commissioned into the 13th Battalion, Jammu & Kashmir Rifles, on 6 December 1997. His first posting was in Sopore, Jammu & Kashmir, where he quickly earned a reputation for courage, initiative, and leadership.

During the Kargil War of 1999, 13 JAK RIF was deployed in the Drass Sector under Operation Vijay. On the night of 19–20 June 1999, then Lieutenant Vikram Batra led Delta Company in the assault on the heavily fortified Point 5140. Scaling near-vertical cliffs under enemy fire, he personally neutralized enemy bunkers in close combat and inspired his men to capture the objective. Following the successful mission, he radioed the famous message, “Yeh Dil Maange More!”, which became one of the defining slogans of the Kargil War. Pakistani forces reportedly referred to him by the radio call sign “Sher Shah,” acknowledging his fearless leadership.

For his next mission, Captain Batra was tasked with recapturing Point 4875 in the Mushkoh Valley. On 7 July 1999, while leading the assault, he observed a fellow officer seriously wounded under enemy fire. Ignoring his own safety, he moved forward to rescue him, reportedly telling a junior officer, “You have a family and children; let me go.” During the rescue attempt and the ensuing assault, he was hit by enemy sniper fire. Even after being mortally wounded, his actions inspired his company to continue the attack and capture the objective. Point 4875 was later renamed “Batra Top” in his honour.

For displaying the most conspicuous bravery, exceptional leadership, and supreme sacrifice in the face of the enemy, Captain Vikram Batra was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest wartime gallantry award. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire generations of soldiers and citizens, and his story has been immortalized in books, memorials, and the film *Shershaah*.

Capt Batra’s Quotes:

“Either I will come back after hoisting the Tricolour (Indian flag), or I will come back wrapped in it, but I will be back for sure.” “Yeh Dil Maange More! (My heart asks for more!)” “Don’t worry about us, pray for your safety.” Capt Batra’s last words were, “Durga Mata Ki Jai!” (“Victory to Goddess Durga!”)”, the battle-cry of his Regiment. When a terrorist’s bullet meant for him had struck his man behind him during his first posting in Sopore in Jammu and Kashmir: “Didi, it was meant for me and I lost my man”, he had told his elder sister over the phone. After the victory at peak 5140, Capt Batra had spoken to his father, Shri G.L Batra and said,” Daddy, I’ve captured.’ His voice was unclear and his father asked him to speak again. ‘Oh Daddy, I’ve captured the enemy’s post. I’m OK, I’m OK”. His father had replied, “Bete, I’m proud of you, may God bless you to carry on your task there”.

Mrs. Kamal Kanta, the mother of Capt Batra’s quotes:

“His loss for us is lifelong. But our son gave his life for the glory of this country. He made us proud in his death.” “It is very rare and our good fortune that we were given a son like him who put the country first.” “Our child has captured three peaks, he had taken the nation by storm and suddenly he was no more”. “But when God gives you a mortal blow, he gives you the strength to cope with the grief. Guru Gobind Singh sacrificed four sons for the country. Maybe there was some reason why God gave me twins — one he had marked for the country and one for me.”
