The Uri terror attack took place on 18 September 2016 at an Indian Army rear administrative base near the brigade headquarters at Uri in Baramulla district, Jammu & Kashmir. At approximately 5:30 AM, four heavily armed foreign terrorists attacked the military complex during a period of unit turnover.
The attackers used automatic small arms, grenades and incendiary ammunition, causing several Army tents and temporary shelters to catch fire. A large number of casualties occurred in the resulting fires, with 13 of the initial 17 fatalities reported as having been trapped in the burning shelters.
The Indian Army's Quick Reaction Team engaged the attackers. The firefight continued until approximately 8:30 AM, and all four terrorists were killed. Four AK-47 rifles, four Under Barrel Grenade Launchers and other war-like stores were recovered from the terrorists. The subsequent detailed search and clearance operation continued around the military complex and was called off on 19 September.
Nineteen Indian Army personnel ultimately lost their lives in the attack, including soldiers who later succumbed to their injuries. The attack became one of the most significant terrorist attacks on an Indian Army installation in Jammu & Kashmir in 2016. The Indian Army subsequently reviewed security arrangements and Standard Operating Procedures at its establishments.
The attack was followed eleven days later by the Indian Army's announced cross-LoC operation of 28–29 September 2016, commonly referred to by the Government of India as the Surgical Strikes, against terrorist launch pads across the Line of Control.
