India's military history through time

Objective

Era Objective

The period from 1962 to 1971 marked one of the most transformative decades in the history of the Indian Army. The Sino-Indian War of 1962 exposed serious shortcomings in preparedness, equipment, logistics and higher defence management. In response, India undertook a major expansion and modernisation programme, raising new mountain formations, improving infrastructure and acquiring modern weapons. The 1965 Indo-Pak War tested these reforms and highlighted further requirements in armour, artillery, communications and combined-arms operations. By 1971, the Army had evolved into a larger, better-equipped and more professionally organised force, capable of conducting coordinated operations across multiple theatres. The successful campaign that led to the liberation of Bangladesh represented the culmination of this decade of reform, preparation and operational learning.

Historical Context

Understanding This Era

The defeat in the 1962 war with China prompted a fundamental reassessment of India’s defence policy and military structure. The Government approved a substantial expansion of the armed forces, including the raising of additional mountain divisions and supporting infrastructure along the northern frontier. Defence expenditure increased significantly, and procurement of modern equipment accelerated. The 1965 war with Pakistan demonstrated the importance of armour, artillery, mobility and coordinated operations between infantry and armoured formations. Lessons from this conflict led to improvements in training, command structures and logistics. Between 1966 and 1971, the Army focused on rebuilding combat capability, improving readiness and integrating new equipment. Under General Sam Manekshaw's leadership, the Army entered the 1971 conflict after careful preparation, achieving a decisive victory and contributing to the creation of Bangladesh.
